St. Vincent - Marrow (Actor, 2009, 4AD)
Annie Clark, better known by her stage name of St. Vincent, is a very talented multi-instrumentalist from Dallas, Texas. Prior to her solo career she was part of Sufjan Stevens’ performing band as well as a member of The Polyphonic Spree. Her debut album, Marry Me (2007), garnered my attention after reading an interview with her in a local newspaper. In 2009, she released her second album, Actor, hands-down my favourite album of the last year. As a live musician, she performs with and without a backing band, but records the majority of her albums by herself, with some support. Having seen her live twice (in Dallas, with a backing band and in Glasgow, by herself) she puts on an excellent show—as live videos and interviews can attest to she is a very energetic guitar player, often crouching on the floor, slapping the side of her guitar in between notes, while jamming her feet on effects pedals. Her songs range from the frenetic (Marrow, Your Lips Are Red) to the contemplative (What Me Worry?, The Party).
