Fife Council speaks out against charging for car parking

Fife councillors are speaking out against proposals to charge for car parking spaces in St Andrews. The availability of spaces is already limited for staff and students of the university, as well as local commuters. The councillors are looking for an extension to the park and ride scheme which runs to the town, or a lowering of the cost of public transport in the town.
Objectors suggest that the lack of parking spaces could also be detrimental to the tourism industry, with councillor Bill Sangster saying it is “not at all friendly to our million-plus tourists and golfing visitors.” Another local councillor, and St Andrews resident, Donald MacGregor says that this is not the right time to be imposing further financial penalties on the public. He thinks that the present system should not be changed, and that there is no need to start charging more for parking.
