Calum Esler

Picture this: you’ve been DJing in the Union for the past five years, you have your own kit and a passion for performance, however, you can’t play the music you want to play. This is a pretty tough situation for any creative individual and it’s the one that DJ, Liquid Alloy, has found himself in.

Liquid Alloy often plays in the Union and enjoys doing so because the profit from these nights makes its way back to the students who come to enjoy themselves. Yet, as a fan of Drum and Bass music he often finds himself restricted in what he can play, having to use more mainstream genres and songs. Not to be put off, Alloy has decided to take matters into his own hands and on Saturday night he took over Sandy’s Bar and put on his own club night featuring music that is not normally available in St. Andrews. ‘CRYPT’ will was hacker themed as this is an extension of the lifestyle of Liquid Alloy and his fellow DJ OpSec (who owns a computer repair shop in the town).

The genre that was played can best be described as Bass music but Alloy promised a whole range. “Some purists tend to shy away from the term EDM,” he says, as they believe it has been appropriated by people who do not fully understand the kind of music it represents. Britain, however, “is top in the world for club culture of this kind and it should be celebrated.” Alloy is Swiss-American whilst OpSec is Bulgarian so you could expect to hear not only a stylistic range but also variations in where the music comes from.

All of this is part of Alloy’s venture to open up St. Andrews to more niche styles of music. He believes that the venue is there for events to be put on if people can prove that there is enough demand for them. To this end he organised a trip to Edinburgh on November 17th where he and several other DJs were playing. He also has plans to bring DJs from the capital to St. Andrews.

So if this is a genre you would like to see more of or if you just want an intimate, atmospheric experience then head down to Sandy’s and support one of St. Andrews’ major DJ talents.
