Jo Boon, the spokesperson for the Yes campaign of the NUS referendum, and Ali West, the deputy spokesperson, have resigned from the campaign due to concerns that questions surrounding the referendum could not be addressed in a fair manner. In a letter to the Elections Committee, Ms Boon and Ms West stated that the electronic rules put forward by the Elections Committee and numerous other sets of circumstances surrounding the referendum had made it impossible for them to answer questions fairly, and so resigned. They said that since the referendum had been introduced as an emergency measure, the rules could be changed at any time and were not made available online. They also believed that the Yes campaign had been poorly represented do to a perceived bias by two Board members who had stated that they were on the side of the No campaign.

The NUS referendum aimed to affiliate St Andrews with other universities across the UK in order to support and protect the rights of students on a national scale. However, joining the NUS would mean a huge change in how the Association was run and funded. The student body opted to remove itself from the NUS in 1977 due to dissatisfaction. The referendum to re-join the NUS in 2012 produced an astounding 75% rejection rate, with only 25% of voters opting to re-join the NUS.

An EGM will be held to find a new spokesperson for the Yes campaign on Wednesday 11th October in the Beacon Bar in the Union.
