This past week St Andrews celebrated Green Week with various events and activities throughout town. The week had over 33 events total, of which 30 were free. The events ranged from film screenings to drinks to Cycletricity. Green Week was put on the the E and E (environment and ethics) team, Transition, and the Estates Environment Team. Additionally, societies are encouraged to engage and host events of their own.

I spoke with Alice Pickthall who serves as the head of the E & E subcommittee as the Association Environment and Ethics Officer. When asked what her favorite event was, she said, “It’s too hard to pick just one, so for me its a close call between Cycletricity, where sports clubs fight it out to see who can generate the most electricity via four fixed bikes in 15 minute slots, and On the Rockery Crockery which involved creating a large sustainable art mosaic from old chipped and unwanted ceramics from the St-And ReUse Project.”

E and E plans to run more events throughout the academic year, including an Ethics Fair during the second semester. They hope to implement a wider environmental agenda across the University with an Environmental Policy for the Association and plan to campaign for the university to become fully divested from fossil fuels.

Friday afternoon I attended the Green Week and On the Rocks collaborative event, On the Rockery Crockery.

Through St-and Reuse’s donation, we were able to repurpose old crockery into art. After a long week, I hadn’t realized how much stress I’d pent up. I was a bit hesitant as the committee handed me a pair of gloves and a hammer, but smashing the plates to pieces was extremely cathartic and a great stress reliever.

By the end of the day, On the Rocks had a beautiful mosaic! This sustainable art event was fabulous, and I encourage people to repurpose old materials in their home as well… just remember your safety goggles.
